While living in Colorado Springs, CO, we often hiked a wonderful park right in the middle of the city, Palmer Park. It is more like being in the mountains than a park. There are trails with plenty of uphill and level areas frequented by hikers and bikers. Designated picnic areas with tables and barbecues are placed conveniently throughout the park. Most importantly, it is wild - as in "no grass" - just lots of trees, rocks and wild flowers.
Now that we live in Salt Lake City, UT, there are several canyons within 5-10 minutes of our home. So instead of our usual 4-mile walk around the neighborhood, we can buzz up Big Cottonwood Canyon for a vigorous hike or walk. Children under 10 or 11 have boundless energy and will enjoy feeling free to bounce along a trail pointing out this bug or "look at that cute little chipmunk!"
