Hiking Vacations - An Inexpensive
Family Weekend Idea

Hiking vacations can be invigorating activities and inexpensive to take the whole family. They can be a gentle stroll through a neighborhood park or a strenuous climb up steep mountains. And, of course, everything in between.

Hiking is excellent exercise too. My husband and I have made a habit of taking at least a 3-4 mile walk every day that we're not working, which is most weekends and holidays.

While living in Colorado Springs, CO, we often hiked a wonderful park right in the middle of the city, Palmer Park. It is more like being in the mountains than a park. There are trails with plenty of uphill and level areas frequented by hikers and bikers. Designated picnic areas with tables and barbecues are placed conveniently throughout the park. Most importantly, it is wild - as in "no grass" - just lots of trees, rocks and wild flowers.

Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah
Now that we live in Salt Lake City, UT, there are several canyons within 5-10 minutes of our home. So instead of our usual 4-mile walk around the neighborhood, we can buzz up Big Cottonwood Canyon for a vigorous hike or walk.

Big Cottonwood Creek, Utah Take the whole family on hiking vacations. Children love to be "let loose" in wild areas (with close supervision, of course). Although teenagers tend to complain, or they would rather be with their friends, they just might end up enjoying time away from those video games and spending time with the family.

Children under 10 or 11 have boundless energy and will enjoy feeling free to bounce along a trail pointing out this bug or "look at that cute little chipmunk!"

Take along a picnic lunch for a bonding experience for the whole family or romantic getaway for couples.

Can you think of a better way to take cheap vacation getaways? Very little money output - lots of satisfying experiences!

Treking Boulder Mountain in Utah
You can spend several vacations in this area and never see all 80 lakes or cover the more than 50,000 acres of rolling forest and meadowlands.
