Cape Horn
The Columbia Gorge is probably the most remote and breathtaking place to hike and camp within 30 minutes of a major American city. Sweeping views of the river and mountains do not disappoint in any season.
I recommend Sullivan's book "100 Hikes in Northern Oregon/ Southwest Washington" which expertly chronicles hikes all along the Gorge for every skill and age level.
While most flock to Multnomah Falls, I prefer less traveled (but just as spectacular) options like Falls Creek Falls, Angels Rest, and Washington's Cape Horn hike--on a weekday, you'll likely see few if any other hikers along your way. The weekends are a bit more populated, but still reasonable. All have quiet primitive campsites along the way (listed in the book), or you could opt for Multnomah Falls Lodge to stay in rustic cozy comfort.
