Stinson Beach, California is one of those romantic beach getaways that has left indelible pictures in my memory.
The town itself is very small with three restaurants and four motels.

We chose to stay at the Stinson Beach Motel. It is 70 years "young" and has been meticulously remodeled. There are eight cottages - all different sizes - with wonderfully comfortable beds, linens and comforters. The rooms and baths are exceptionally clean and bright.

The courtyards are exploding with colorful blooms of bright red Bougainvillea, a giant Philodendron, Clematis, Fuchsia, Star Jasmine and several other gorgeous flowering shrubs.

Ten reclining deck chairs are provided in the courtyard for relaxing. Because everything grows so well in Stinson Beach no matter which month of the year you visit, something is always in bloom. It is obvious the owner takes great pride in these gardens.

I have only one word for this beach getaway - AWESOME! We happened to be there on a day when most of the rest of the world was somewhere else. There were only a few people on the entire beach. Most of the visitors that day were Seagulls.
We stopped at the very small grocery store on our way to the beach and bought some crackers. Seagulls, as you may know, will eat just about anything.
As we sat on the sand warming ourselves in the sun, we delighted in watching the Seagulls snatch the pieces of cracker that we threw out. Sometimes several would fight over one piece, not noticing that there were many other pieces scattered around. Other times, we would throw out a few crumbs when no birds were close, just to see them swoop down from 100 yards away. They have very keen eyesight!
There is no easy, quick access to Stinson Beach, but you will find it on Highway 1 on north of San Francisco. Check the map here. It's perfect for romantic beach getaways — away from the maddening crowds.
